Stormchase USA 2024 (Index)

19.05.2024: Shamrock, TX - Canadian - Weatherford, OK - Shamrock, TX (310 miles)

Rating:

Today we decide to drive northwards towards Kansas. Estimated target is the area near Garden City, as the models show intense activity later this afternoon. But after half an hour of driving, as soon as we reach Canadian, TX, we spot a suspicious cumulus field towards Pampa, TX:

The satellite image confirms that more cumulus is growing behind that, over Amarillo, TX:

So we decide to stop our drive at Canadian for now and go for a nice pizza instead. Meanwhile the clouds to our southwest keep growing:

Time to get out the real camera:

Thunder begins to rumble above our heads and we spot precip fall streaks:

The thunderstorm is doing not bad, we stay here and keep watching:

It gets warned and cloud-to-ground lightning occurs:

As the first cell weakens and a new updraft is developing south of Canadian, we move 10 miles south as well and witness the birth of a strong storm:

Quickly the structure of the storm becomes better organized. We start to move east with it, as it derives more and more to the east from its original track:

A classical rotating supercell is born!

Now the storm grows massively in size and strength, the hail reports are getting bigger:

We have to move further east to be able to catch the structure. Look at that beast, holy-moly!

The striations of that thing:

It really starts to pull on the air, the inflow gets stronger and a tornado report comes in from under there:

There are a few fractus or funnels but our distance to the storms does not reveal any possible tornado. But the structure! Solid 4 stars rating for this one:
